Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan were established on June 6, 1992. Cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan began in early 1991. In 1993, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan opened its Embassy in the Republic of Tajikistan, and its activities began in 1994. The Republic of Tajikistan opened its Consulate General in Islamabad in 1997, and since February 23, 2005, the Embassy of Tajikistan in Pakistan has been functioning.
Since June 10, 2024, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has been Sharifzoda Yusuf Toirali.
Since April 2024, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Tajikistan has been Muhammad Saeed Sarwar.
Bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Pakistan have been steadily developing thanks to the efforts of both sides. Over 33 years of relations, there have been 8 official and state visits of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (March 1994, 1996, 1997, May 12-14, 2004, March 7-10, 2011, November 12-13, 2015, June 2-3, 2021, and December 14-15, 2022).
Also, on March 1, 2017, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, made a working visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to participate in the 13th Economic Cooperation Organization Summit in Islamabad. On June 2, 2021, the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon made an official visit to Pakistan, during which 12 cooperation agreements were signed. On December 14, 2022, the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon made another official visit to Pakistan, during which 8 agreements were signed.
On September 15, 2022, the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan.
On October 13, 2022, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif in Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan, during the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
On November 8, 2022, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif in Sharm el-Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt, during the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-27).
On August 28, 2023, the Founder of Peace and National Unity — Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza.
On October 26, 2023, in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, within the framework of the meeting of the Heads of Government Council of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Kohir Rasulzoda, met with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Jalil Abbas Jilani.
The President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has made 3 official and working visits to Tajikistan (June 2-3, 2002, July 28-30, 2009, and March 24-26, 2012). In recent years, there have also been official and working visits by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, to Dushanbe (June 17-18, 2014, June 9-10, 2015 (working visit to participate in the "Water for Life" Conference), May 11-12, 2016 (ceremony for the start of construction works on the CASA-1000 project), July 5-6, 2017 (official visit to participate in the meeting of Heads of State and Government of the countries involved in the CASA-1000 project), and September 16-17, 2021 (official visit to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the SCO).
On March 31, 2021, a bilateral meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who was on an official visit to participate in the Ninth Conference of Foreign Ministers of the "Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process" member countries in Dushanbe from March 29-31, 2021.
On March 21, 2022, a meeting took place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, who was in Islamabad to participate in the 48th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation from March 21-23, 2022.
On July 28, 2022, in Tashkent, within the framework of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states, a meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
On January 23, 2023, in Tashkent, within the framework of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization, a meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
On April 13, 2023, in Samarkand, within the framework of the Fourth Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan's Neighboring Countries, a bilateral meeting took place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Hina Rabbani Khar.
An active Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific, and technical cooperation operates between the two countries, which is one of the main mechanisms for developing bilateral economic cooperation. From December 10-14, 2024, the seventh meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Technical Cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan took place in Islamabad.
Based on the "Transit Trade Agreement" of December 14, 2022, on April 1, 2024, for the first time in the history of bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Tajikistan, a cargo convoy from Pakistan arrived in Tajikistan, which was carried out by the National Logistics Cell (NLC) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
In 2024, the foreign trade between the two countries amounted to 58,081.9 million US dollars, which is an 11% increase compared to 2023.
The legal and contractual foundation of bilateral relations is based on 96 agreements and memoranda of understanding between the governments and in various fields.
Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are also very active.
