Bilateral Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were established on 9 January 1992. The Embassy of Iran in Dushanbe commenced its activities on the same date, while the Embassy of Tajikistan in Tehran was inaugurated on 18 July 1995.

Over the course of more than three decades of diplomatic relations, the President of Tajikistan visited Iran in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2022, and 2024. Iranian Presidents reciprocated with visits to Tajikistan in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025.

In 2024, President Emomali Rahmon undertook two working visits to Tehran: to attend the farewell ceremony of former President S. Raisi on 22 May, and the inauguration of the newly elected President M. Pezeshkian.

The state visit of the newly elected President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, to Tajikistan took place on 15–16 January 2025. During this visit, 23 new cooperation documents were signed.

On 8–9 January 2024, the Chairman of the National Assembly of Tajikistan and Mayor of Dushanbe, Rustami Emomali, paid an official visit to Iran, during which new agreements were concluded in the fields of parliamentary, scientific, economic, and intercity cooperation.

From 17 to 19 February 2025, Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda paid an official visit to Iran and participated in the Third Caspian Economic Conference.

To date, more than 200 agreements and memoranda have been signed between the two countries. One of the most significant developments in 2024 was the abolition of the visa regime between the two states.

On 24 November 2025, the third round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs was held in Dushanbe at the deputy minister level, followed by the seventh round of consular consultations on 10 December 2025.

The Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation plays a central role in bilateral economic relations. Seventeen meetings have been held to date, the most recent occurring on 5–9 May 2025 in Iran. Following the Trade, Economic, Investment, and Tourism Forum (15–17 January 2025), 13 agreements valued at USD 456 million were signed by entrepreneurs from both countries.

In 2025, bilateral trade turnover reached USD 438 million, reflecting a 28% increase compared to previous years.

Air connectivity is maintained by Varesh Airlines (Tehran–Dushanbe–Tehran and Mashhad–Dushanbe–Mashhad) and, since January 2023, by Somon Air (Dushanbe–Tehran–Dushanbe). Currently, three weekly flights operate on the Tehran–Dushanbe route.

Cultural cooperation continues to expand.

The Days of Culture of Tajikistan were held in Iran in October 2022, and the Days of Culture of Iran were organized in Tajikistan in October–November 2022. Tajikistan also regularly participates in the Tehran International Book Fair, including as Guest of Honour in 2023.
